2133f3157e Fixed #24168 -- Allowed selecting a template engine in a few APIs. 
Specifically in rendering shortcuts, template responses, and class-based
views that return template responses.

Also added a test for render_to_response(status=...) which was missing
from fdbfc980.

b5c1a85b50 Fixed #24118 -- Added --debug-sql option for tests. 
Added a --debug-sql option for tests and runtests.py which outputs the
SQL logger for failing tests. When combined with --verbosity=2, it also
outputs the SQL for passing tests.

6c392bb2c0 Moved doc on the DTL's syntax to the ref/ section. 
This makes room for a more general introduction about templating.

Updated some links to point to the new location, but kept those that
didn't talk specifically about the DTL.

e22c64dfc0 Fixed #23742 -- Added an option to reverse tests order. 
This is useful for debugging side effects affecting tests that
are usually executed before a given test. Full suite and pair
tests sort cases more or less deterministically, thus some test
cross-dependencies are easier to reveal by reversing the order.

7331788300 Avoided rewrapping Contexts in render_to_response. 
This change preserves backwards-compatibility for a very common misuse
of render_to_response which even occurred in the official documentation.

It fixes that misuse wherever it happened in the code base and docs.

Context.__init__ is documented as accepting a dict and nothing else.
Since Context is dict-like, Context(Context({})) could work to some
extent. However, things get complicated with RequestContext and that
gets in the way of refactoring the template engine. This is the real
rationale for this change.

If we allow any value to remove form fields then we get name clashes
with method names, media classes etc. There was a backwards
incompatibility introduced meaning ModelForm subclasses with declared
fields called media or clean would lose those fields.

Field removal is now only permitted by using the sentinel value None.
The docs have been slightly reworded to refer to removal of fields
rather than shadowing.

393c0e2422 Fixed #20936 -- When logging out/ending a session, don't create a new, empty session. 
Previously, when logging out, the existing session was overwritten by a
new sessionid instead of deleting the session altogether.

This behavior added overhead by creating a new session record in
whichever backend was in use: db, cache, etc.

This extra session is unnecessary at the time since no session data is
meant to be preserved when explicitly logging out.

6fe22b30e0 Fixed #22085 -- Added a feature for setting non-expiring keys as the default. 
This feature allows the default `TIMEOUT` Cache argument to be set to `None`,
so that cache instances can set a non-expiring key as the default,
instead of using the default value of 5 minutes.

Previously, this was possible only by passing `None` as an argument to
the set() method of objects of type `BaseCache` (and subtypes).

9ffab9cee1 Moved RequestSite and get_current_site. 
Following the app-loading refactor, these objects must live outside of
django.contrib.sites.models because they must be available without
importing the django.contrib.sites.models module when
django.contrib.sites isn't installed.

The last component of the dotted path to the application module is
consistently referenced as the application "label". For instance it's

75ec1fdf16 Clarifed table rewrites in migration docs. 
Small nitpicks. All column-related ALTER TABLE commands take an
exclusive table lock in PostgreSQL. The difference is that adding a
column without default doesn't cause a table rewrite, so the lock is
held only for a short time.

The time taken is more accurately proportional to table size, not row
count.

54cd930baf Clarfied the ModelForm docs with respect to generated vs. declared fields. 
The ModelForm docs suggested that fields defined declaratively override
default fields generated from the form Meta.

This is conceptually wrong, especially with inheritance in mind. Meta is
usually defined on the topmost ModelForm subclass, while fields can come
from anywhere in the MRO, especially base classes; therefore we suggested
that something defined in a base class override something from a subclass.

This patch rephrases the docs around the idea that Meta is used to generate
*missing* fields.

c33d1ca1d9 Fixed #20852 - Fixed incorrectly generated left quotes in docs. 
Sphinx generates left single quotes for apostrophes after
code markup, when right single quotes are required. The
easiest way to fix this is just by inserting the unicode
character for a right single quote.

Instances of the problem were found by looking for
">&#8216;" in the generated HTML.

31fadc1202 Fixed #20625 -- Chainable Manager/QuerySet methods. 
Additionally this patch solves the orthogonal problem that specialized
`QuerySet` like `ValuesQuerySet` didn't inherit from the current `QuerySet`
type. This wasn't an issue until now because we didn't officially support
custom `QuerySet` but it became necessary with the introduction of this new
feature.

1184d07789 Fixed #14881 -- Modified password reset to work with a non-integer UserModel.pk. 
uid is now base64 encoded in password reset URLs/views. A backwards compatible
password_reset_confirm view/URL will allow password reset links generated before
this change to continue to work. This view will be removed in Django 1.7.

55cbd65985 Fixed #20579 -- Improved TransactionTestCase.available_apps. 
Also moved its documentation to the 'advanced' section. It doesn't
belong to the 'overview'. Same for TransactionTestCase.reset_sequences.

When available_apps is set, after a TransactionTestCase, the database
is now totally empty. post_syncdb is fired at the beginning of the next
TransactionTestCase.

584bd14dcf Fixed #18134 -- BoundField.label_tag now includes the form's label_suffix 
There was an inconsistency between how the label_tag for forms were
generated depending on which method was used: as_p, as_ul and as_table
contained code to append the label_suffix where as label_tag called on a
form field directly did NOT append the label_suffix. The code for
appending the label_suffix has been moved in to the label_tag code of
the field and the HTML generation code for as_p, as_ul and as_table now
calls this code as well.

This is a backwards incompatible change because users who have added the
label_suffix manually in their templates may now get double label_suffix
characters in their forms.

4daf570b98 Added TransactionTestCase.available_apps. 
This can be used to make Django's test suite significantly faster by
reducing the number of models for which content types and permissions
must be created and tables must be flushed in each non-transactional
test.

It's documented for Django contributors and committers but it's branded
as a private API to preserve our freedom to change it in the future.

Most of the credit goes to Anssi. He got the idea and did the research.

normalize_email should be called on the instance, not the class. This
has the same effect normally but is more helpful to subclassers. When
methods are called directly on the class, subclasses can't override
them.

d228c1192e Fixed #19866 -- Added security logger and return 400 for SuspiciousOperation. 
SuspiciousOperations have been differentiated into subclasses, and
are now logged to a 'django.security.*' logger. SuspiciousOperations
that reach django.core.handlers.base.BaseHandler will now return a 400
instead of a 500.

A decorator is easier to apply to CBVs. Backwards compatibility isn't an

The origin statement "which could be ... or whatever" **misguides** many newbies like me.

In fact, the ``login`` function in ``contrib.auth`` stores ``user.pk`` in session, then ``get_user`` function in ``contrib.auth`` gets ``user.pk`` in session and then passes it to your custom ``get_user`` as ``user_id``.

Which means, ``user_id`` prarameter in your custom ``get_user`` has to be the primary key of ``User`` object, too.

you'd need to double the percent signs in the query before passing

f9ab543720 Fixed #20084 -- Provided option to validate formset max_num on server. 
This is provided as a new "validate_max" formset_factory option defaulting to
False, since the non-validating behavior of max_num is longstanding, and there
is certainly code relying on it. (In fact, even the Django admin relies on it
for the case where there are more existing inlines than the given max_num). It
may be that at some point we want to deprecate validate_max=False and
eventually remove the option, but this commit takes no steps in that direction.

This also fixes the DoS-prevention absolute_max enforcement so that it causes a
form validation error rather than an IndexError, and ensures that absolute_max
is always 1000 more than max_num, to prevent surprising changes in behavior
with max_num close to absolute_max.

Lastly, this commit fixes the previous inconsistency between a regular formset
and a model formset in the precedence of max_num and initial data. Previously
in a regular formset, if the provided initial data was longer than max_num, it
was truncated; in a model formset, all initial forms would be displayed
regardless of max_num. Now regular formsets are the same as model formsets; all
initial forms are displayed, even if more than max_num. (But if validate_max is
True, submitting these forms will result in a "too many forms" validation
error!) This combination of behaviors was chosen to keep the max_num validation
simple and consistent, and avoid silent data loss due to truncation of initial
data.

83a416f5e7 Made atomic usable when autocommit is off. 
Thanks Anssi for haggling until I implemented this.

This change alleviates the need for atomic_if_autocommit. When
autocommit is disabled for a database, atomic will simply create and
release savepoints, and not commit anything. This honors the contract of
not doing any transaction management.

This change also makes the hack to allow using atomic within the legacy
transaction management redundant.

None of the above will work with SQLite, because of a flaw in the design
of the sqlite3 library. This is a known limitation that cannot be lifted
without unacceptable side effects eg. triggering arbitrary commits.

47ddd6a408 Fixed #19552 -- Enhanced makemessages handling of `{# #}`-style template comments. 
They are simply ignored now. This allows for a more correct behavior when
they are placed before translatable constructs on the same line.

Previously, the latter were wrongly ignored because the former were
preserved when converting template code to the internal Python-syntax
form later fed to xgettext but Python has no ``/* ... */``-style
comments.

Also, special comments directed to translators are now only taken in
account when they are located at the end of a line. e.g.::

  {# Translators: ignored #}{% trans "Literal A" %}{# Translators: valid, associated with "Literal B" below #}
  {% trans "Literal B" %}

Behavior of ``{% comment %}...{% endcomment %}``tags remains unchanged.

cd17a24083 Added optional kwargs to get_expiry_age/date. 
This change allows for cleaner tests: we can test the exact output.

Refs #18194: this change makes it possible to compute session expiry
dates at times other than when the session is saved.

Fixed #18458: the existence of the `modification` kwarg implies that you
must pass it to get_expiry_age/date if you call these functions outside
of a short request - response cycle (the intended use case).

It appears that our infamous villain, Significant Whitespace,
has struck again.

In this episode, little Timmy finds himself trapped in a
code well.  He need not despair, however, as Indentation Man
has heard his cries for help and sprung into action.

With his feline helper, Octocat, at his side, Indentation Man
races to the scene, flings open a web-based code editor, and with

c5ef65bcf3 [py3] Ported django.utils.encoding. 
* Renamed smart_unicode to smart_text (but kept the old name under
  Python 2 for backwards compatibility).
* Renamed smart_str to smart_bytes.
* Re-introduced smart_str as an alias for smart_text under Python 3
  and smart_bytes under Python 2 (which is backwards compatible).
  Thus smart_str always returns a str objects.
* Used the new smart_str in a few places where both Python 2 and 3
  want a str.

ab6cd1c839 [py3] Updated dict-like data structures for Python 3. 
The keys/items/values methods return iterators in Python 3, and the
iterkeys/items/values methods don't exist in Python 3. The behavior
under Python 2 is unchanged.

f758bdab5e Fixed #18271 -- Changed stage at which TransactionTestCase flushes DB tables. 
Previously, the flush was done before the test case execution and now
it is performed after it.

Other changes to the testing infrastructure include:

* TransactionTestCase now doesn't reset autoincrement sequences either
  (previous behavior can achieved by using `reset_sequences`.)
  With this, no implicit such reset is performed by any of the provided
  TestCase classes.

* New ordering of test cases: All unittest tes cases are run first and
  doctests are run at the end.

THse changes could be backward-incompatible with test cases that relied
on some kind of state being preserved between tests. Please read the
relevant sections of the release notes and testing documentation for
further details.

Thanks Andreas Pelme for the initial patch. Karen Tracey and Anssi
Kääriäinen for the feedback and Anssi for reviewing.

This also fixes #12408.

a2e927b7ed BaseCache now has a no-op close method as per ticket #18582 
Also removed the hasattr check when firing request_finished signal for

Saving session data is somewhat likely to lead into error when the
status code is 500. It is guaranteed to lead into error if the reason

6ed7d40727 Fixed #18115 - added warning about overlaid install. 
Setup.py now warns if it detects that Django is being installed over top
of a previous installation that was never removed. This should only
happen when installing with ``python setup.py install``, as pip
automatically uninstalls before installing a new version and
easy_install installs as an egg directory.

Also generally updated the installation doc.

This make them consistent with the similar capability of regular

8312b85c97 Added support for savepoints to the MySQL DB backend. 
MySQL provides the savepoint functionality starting with version 5.0.3
when using the MyISAM storage engine.

1c16907199 Added a password reset link to default admin login page if a password reset URL is available. 
You no longer have to override the admin login page just to get that link to
appear!

Also provided much better docs for how to plug in the provided password
reset mechanism with minimum effort.
